São Tomé & Príncipe is one of the most valued cacao origins in the world. It was the first place where cacao was imported from America in the 19th century by the Portuguese. Due to its exceptional quality, the country became known as “The Cocoa Islands”.

Cultivated in agroforestry since its introduction to the country, meaning the rainforest is not deforested to grow it. Instead, cacao is cultivated by imitating the natural functioning of the jungle ecosystem. That is why these plantations comply with the new European EUDR anti-deforestation regulations almost two centuries before the European Union even existed.
